Cylon walked slowly along the edge of the cliffs. Perilously close to the edge. The setting sun cast a deep orange glow across the ocean. He sat down and silently raised his nose to the cooling sea breeze, staring absentmindedly out toward the water. He had always wondered what lay beyond its deep blue expanse. With a sigh he turned away. The problems Agro had brought with his reign topped even his wildest imaginings. Food was harder to find, especially with his guards running all over taking the prey. Not a single dog on the island wasn't worried, except those loyal to Agro. Including Cylon. He got to his paws and continued down the cliff line at a trot.

Avalon padded carefully up the steep incline towards the cliffs. She knew she would be safe here. The guards would never risk climbling all the way up here. The cliffs were steep, covered in slippery, loose rock. A wrong step could send someone hurtling into the ocean far below. It was next to impossible that anyone could survive such a fall. Finally at the top, Avalon began to walk along the cliff line, gazing at the island. The view was beautiful. She could see the village from here. She shuddered, grateful that she could not see what was happening there at this moment.

A strange new scent hit Cylon's nose. It was definitely a dog, a female by the smell of it. He turned his head and saw her sitting a short way away. She had not yet noticed him. The female must have come to the cliffs to escape it all, just like me, he figured out silently to himself. He changed his path and began moving towards her, slowly as not to have a misstep and plummet from the cliff side. "Hello there" He called out to get her attention.

Avalon was lost in thought when suddenly she heard someone speak. "Hello there!" She leaped to her feet, her heart pounding, and turned to face the newcomer. She looked him over, quickly trying to assess whether or not he was a threat. After a moment she relaxed. He did not appear to be a threat to her. He seemed relaxed up here on the cliffs, as if he came here often. Perhaps he, too, was just trying to forget. "Hi," she replied, "What are you doing all the way up here?" She was still a bit cautious. There was a chance he could be one of Agro's guards.

"Escaping the Truth" He replied, looking at the ground. He didn't know if this new female dog was a supporter of Agro or not, but he didn't care. He sat down and shook his thick neck ruff. "What's your name?" he asked curiously. He had a good feeling about this dog, as though she was truthful enough to never betray him. Or anyone for that matter. He cocked his head to the side, waiting for an answer.

Avalon watched the dog carefully as he sat down and spoke. He meant no harm. Still, she hesitated before giving her name. "Avalon," she stated, "I'm here for that reason as well. Agro's guards are in the village, slaughtering anyone who refuses to profess their undying loyalty to Agro. What is your name?" She waited to here the strangers response. She had included the bit about Agro as somewhat of a test. Perhaps she could tell for sure that he was on her side based on his response. She shook her head in frustration. What had happened to her? She had used to be so trusting. She could trust no one.

Cylon saw the female hesitate and new that she thought he might be one of Agro's guards. Her statement about the guards confirmed his notion. "Avalon." He said "That is a good name, it fits you." He waited a few moments before speaking again. "I am Cylon. I tend to avoid the village for that very reason. I have no loyalty to Agro, and the guards are always trying to recruit me to a position. You can only say 'no' to them so many times, and I knew to say it again was to put myself in danger."

Avalon let herself relax. She could usually tell when people were telling the truth. Cylon did not appear to be lying. She sat down beside him and gazed out at the village. "My parents...vanished...during the first raid, the night Agro became king. If only I hadn't left home so soon, maybe I could've saved them." She hung her head. She couldn't believe that she was opening up to a complete stranger that, only a few seconds ago, she had not trusted at all. He probably thought she was crazy. Then again, wasn't everyone slightly crazy when a war was begining?

Cylon felt a hint of sympathy for Avalon. He had never known his parents very well, so he had never had to really cope with such a loss ever before. "I'm sorry about your loss Avalon. I never knew parents. At least you got to enjoy their company and take comfort from their presence." He said, voice calm despite his current sadness "You don't know where they are, that doesn't mean they are lost forever. You will find them." He spoke with resolve. Cylon didn't like seeing this obviously upbeat creature so down. "I promise."

Avalon sighed happily, remembering her parent's faces. She debated for a second. When she had first found her parents missing, she had believed they were still out there, that she would find them. But as time wore on and she witnessed murder after murder in the village streets, her hopes had slipped away and she was left with emptiness. But Cylon sounded resolved, as if he knew she would find them. It reminded her of how she had felt before. But still, their were doubts. "Do you really think so? I mean, what about all those others that the guards killed? My parents were strong supporters of Apollo. If the guards caught them, they wouldn't stand a chance!" Avalon quizzed.

The doubt in Avalon's eyes didn't phase Cylon. "Of course I think so, I wouldn't have said it if I didn't. Now would I?" Cylon gave a snort when he thought of Agro's vicious guards. "If your parents were strong supporters of Apollo, they would have sensed the danger and made sure they got away. I don't believe they were dense enough to let themselves get caught by the guards." He nodded in agreement with himself. "If they were caught, they would not have been killed. Think of how nice it would be for Agro to have two of Apollo's strongest supporters on his side. No doubt, if they are caught, they are in the dungeon being pushed and pulled towards Agro's side. But if their resolve is strong, they are not submitting to him."

Avalon smiled as she pictured her parents fighting against Agro's attempts to persuade them. They would never join him. She knew this for certain. And if he had them trapped, well, then it was up to her to rescue them. But how? She knew it was suicide to go up against Agro and his guards alone, but she was not yet ready to join the rebels. The rebels were, in some ways, just as bad as the guards, in Avalon's opinion. They only believed that their killing was justified because they were killing the bad guys. But some of those 'bad guys' were just following orders. Some of the guards and the rebels had been friends-perhaps even family-before all this started. She couldn't imagine going up against someone she used to know and...hurting them. "Thank you," she smiled, "You've made my day. I only wish I could help them somehow."

"Why, your very welcome Avalon." Said Cylon with a grin. Then he got to his paws. "Would you like to hunt with me? Perhaps it will distract us from this." He really wanted to just be able to think about Avalon's situation. He wanted to help, which wasn't like him at all. He figured that if he knew more about her and her parents he could help her more. And what better way to do that than by taking a hunting trip?

Avalon thought for a second. She was hungry. Agro's guards were taking all of the food, even when they didn't eat it. Rumor was that they were stockpiling it at the palace. It was hard to find enought to eat. Maybe if there were two of them hunting it would be easier. "Hunting sound good!" she decided, lifting herself to her feet. "Where should we go?" She turned towards the village, knowing she wasn't about to go back there just yet. Besides, there was definatley no prey anywhere near the village, what with so many dogs living there. She faced Cylon again, perking her ears, waiting for his response.

Bright, silvery streams of sunlight peaked past a boulder that was thrust in front of the entrance of a damp cave. Concealed behind this boulder, two young female dogs slept. One stirred, and cracked open an eye. Caillou. Someone was just outside of the haven they had thought would be safe...
"Would you like to hunt with me? Perhaps it will distract us from this." She could barely make out the voice of a male dog. As she listened harder, she heard, "Hunting sounds good! Where should we go?"
Caillou sat up as quietly as she could. Though they sounded harmless, these dogs could be on Agro's side. She refused to think about what would happen if they were. Slowly, she made her way to the boulder that blocked the entrance. She nudged it over silently, and pressed her eye to the small opening so that she could look outside.
Not far away, she spotted the two dogs she had been listening to. They were making small talk, though both seemed a little wary of each other. Caillou wondered if they had scented her yet. She hoped not. The smell of the ocean hopefully overwhelmed her scent. Caillou looked back at her sister Lune, who was still curled up in a ball, and then sighed. She continued to watch the strangers.
If they even think of laying a paw on Lune, they'll regret it, she thought.
